Highlights of the buffet
I’ve always had a soft spot for Japanese buffets. Therefore, when I was invited for a food tasting session at Shinkei Japanese Restaurant, I accepted it without hesitation.
Located at 600@Toa Payoh, Shinkei has been operating for over two years. This 168-seater restaurant prides itself on offering quality Japanese food at affordable prices. Shinkei is probably the only restaurant which offers over 120 items with fresh sashimi air-flown from Norway and Japan.

The open kitchen
The interior is cosy and minimalistic with woody elements. In addition to the main dining area, there is also a sushi bar, two private rooms seating up to 10 to 35 guests and an open kitchen where diners can watch the chefs prepare the food à la minute.

The private room
The whole dining experience was very pleasant from the beginning to the end. Service was efficient and the waitresses were polite and amiable. Ordering of food was done through a chit and food was served promptly to our table without us leaving our comfortable seats.

Sashimi moriwase, assorted sushi, gyoza, clams and salad
What I enjoyed most about the buffet was the sashimi moriwase which consisted of salmon, yellow tail, tuna, swordfish, octopus and squid. The freshness and sweetness can be savoured in every bite. The best part is that you can eat to your heart’s content without worrying about burning a hole in your pocket.

Prawn tempura
The assorted tempura was also deftly executed, resulting in a light and fluffy batter. The prawn tempura was my favourite as the prawns were succulent and the batter was fried to the right degree with crispness.

Assorted sushi
The assorted sushi were delightful as well and I like the California maki (crabstick with avocado sushi roll) and the shake abuei maki (roasted salmon sushi roll).
The grilled items such as the saba shioyaki (grilled mackerel with salt), shishamo (pregnant capelin), zucchini be-kon (zucchini wrapped with bacon) and bata suitokon (sweet corn with butter) were tasty too.

Asari garlic yaki (asari clam sauteed with butter and soya sauce)
If you are a fan of seafood, you must not miss the asari garlic yaki (asari clam sautéed with butter and soya sauce). The texture of the clams are tender yet luscious, complemented by the light, delicate flavours of butter and soya.
Other favourites include age gyoza (fried Japanese dumpling) and satsuma imo roll (sweet potato roll).
There is also a kid’s menu to whet the appetites of your little ones. Highlights include ham and bacon pizza, pan-fried noodles, ramen in shoyu soup, garlic fried rice, salmon rice porridge and more.
End your meal on a refreshing note with free flow of soft drinks, green tea and ice cream.
